La maison Mathieu-Froment-Savoie was founded in 1993 in memory of Mathieu Froment-Savoie, a young cellist who died of cancer in 1991 at the age of 13. The organization has provided community services to the people of the Outaouais and the surrounding areas since its official inception in 1999.

All our services are provided free of charge. Terminally-ill people in the Outaouais (regardless of their age or social status) and their families can access services offered by La maison Mathieu-Froment-Savoie. The services include:
  • At-home care provided by qualified volunteers
  • Accommodation at the palliative care centre
  • Bereavement support to families
  • Palliative care training
  • Accommodation: La maison Mathieu-Froment-Savoie, which is located in the former Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci convent in Aylmer (see photos), provides accommodation for periods whose length can vary from a few days to several weeks as well as support from an experienced medical and volunteer team. The main team is composed of nurses, physicians and trained volunteers while other professionals, such as psychologists, social workers, music therapists, pastoral associates, etc, join the team as and when the need arises.
    We offer three kinds of accommodation:
  • Accommodation during the last weeks of life
  • Control and management of pain and other symptoms
  • Temporary accommodation to provide respite care during the terminal phase
  • Our main objectives are:

  • To ease pain in terminally ill people;
  • To provide support to terminally ill people and their family during this difficult period;
  • To provide support to the family and friends and prepare them to participate in taking care and supporting the terminally ill person, depending on their ability.
