What a volonteering experience says about you in your cv - You are continually seeking means of improving your competencies to improve your employability potential.
- The Conference Board of Canada identifies these competencies as the abilities, attitudes and behaviours that employers seek of new employees. In a 2000 National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating amongst Canadians who were volunteers, 79% of respondents indicated that they had acquired competencies in interpersonal skills, 68% improved their communications skills and 57% enhanced their overall organizational and management skills.
- You benefit from a large network of personal contacts.
- Individuals who are not familiar with volunteer work may not evaluate the relevance of networks that link community based organisations among themselves, as well as with various levels of governments, the private sector and the population at large. Volunteers often meet individuals from various backgrounds and sectors when performing their duties.
- You demonstrate impressive interpersonal skills.
- Volunteer work often requires that you be part of a team or deal with clients with different needs. This is an invaluable opportunity for you to improve your interpersonal skills, become a group leader, bring about conflict resolution, etc. This experience is not necessarily acquired during your studies, even at the university level.
- You demonstrate your multi-skilled qualification.
- When doing volunteer work in a community based organization, you can obtain a letter of reference from a sector that is quite different than the business community. You demonstrate your leadership ability in performing in a complex environment and adapting to rapid changes.
- You prefer not to waste your time.
- While some individuals may like to loiter and remain unproductive, you prefer to be useful and offer your uncommon energy level for the benefit of an organization by volunteering a few hours a week.
- You acquire an invaluable work experience.
- While volunteer work experience in a resume used to be considered a demonstration of citizen involvement in its community and not necessarily a proof of valid professional experience, this is now changing. It is generally recognized by the population as well as the private sector that volunteer work needs to be considered in the overall evaluation of a candidate competencies, training and experience.
- You are self-controlled and self -disciplined.
- Maintaining a regular time commitment as a volunteer requires discipline and rigour. As is the case with remunerated employment, volunteers mustcomply with a code conduct and meet deadlines.
- You set yourself ahead of the game.
- Volunteer work experience may become the deciding factor in being considered for grants, registrations and employment, particularly if other candidates possess similar professional qualifications. When 200 most competitive companies in the United Kingdom were asked about the value of volunteer work: 73% indicated that they favoured candidates who had previously done volunteer work and 94% believed in the added value of the training gained through volunteering.
